Telemetry Data and Update Frequency

What is Telemetry?

Telemetry in the Covolt API refers to the real-time operational data collected from your battery and solar assets. This data provides insights into the current state, performance, and energy flows of your assets.

Update Frequency

Covolt strives to provide timely telemetry updates for all connected assets:

  • Battery Assets: Telemetry data is typically updated every minute under normal conditions.
  • Solar Assets: Telemetry data is typically updated every minute depending on the solar inverter type.
  • Power Meters: Telemetry data is typically updated every minute under normal conditions.
info

Update frequency may vary based on network conditions, asset type, and connection quality. The measured_at timestamp in telemetry records indicates when the data was collected from the physical device, which may differ from when it was received by our system (created_at).

Accessing Telemetry Data

Latest Telemetry

To retrieve the most recent telemetry data for your assets, use:

For Battery Assets:

GET /v2/battery-assets/telemetry/

For Solar Assets:

GET /v2/solar-assets/telemetry/

For Power Meter Assets:

GET /v2/power-meters/telemetry/

Battery Telemetry Fields

Battery assets provide the following telemetry information:

FieldDescriptionUnitsNotes
state_of_chargeCurrent battery charge level%Range: 0-100%
active_powerCurrent power flow to/from batterykWPositive: discharging, Negative: charging
charged_energyCumulative energy chargedkWhLifetime total
discharged_energyCumulative energy dischargedkWhLifetime total
measured_atTimestamp of measurementISO 8601When data was collected from device

Solar Telemetry Fields

Solar assets provide the following telemetry information:

FieldDescriptionUnitsNotes
active_powerCurrent power generationkWInstantaneous generation
measured_atTimestamp of measurementISO 8601When data was collected from device

Power Meter Telemetry Fields

Power meter assets provide the following telemetry information:

measured_atTimestamp of measurementISO 8601When data was collected from device

Handling Telemetry Gaps

Occasional gaps in telemetry data may occur due to:

  • Temporary network connectivity issues
  • Asset maintenance periods
  • Communication timeouts

Best practices for handling telemetry gaps:

  1. Use the measured_at field to identify when data was actually collected
  2. Implement error handling for missing or delayed telemetry
  3. Consider implementing an exponential backoff strategy if telemetry is temporarily unavailable
  4. For critical applications, cache the last known good values

Telemetry Retention

Covolt retains telemetry data for a period of 12 months. For applications requiring longer data retention, we recommend regularly retrieving and storing telemetry data in your own systems.
